About The Visa Officer

From 2010 to 2014 I had the honor of being a member of the Foreign Service at the U.S. Department of State. My first assignment took me to a high volume visa posting where I worked on immigrant visas, non-immigrant visas, and American citizen services. This entailed interviewing applicants, issuing visas, managing the Consular Section’s communications with petitioners and applicants, screening for fraud, and training colleagues.

During this assignment I issued thousands of visas, ranging from B-1/B-2 visas for tourism and business, to F-1 and J-1 visas for study, K-1s for fiancées, and all family-based immigrant categories. I also denied plenty of visas for various reasons.

Ever since leaving the Foreign Service I have received a lot of questions about people’s personal visa situations and realized that there is a lack of easy to understand information available to people applying for visas to the United States. While there are many good immigration attorneys, they do not necessarily understand how visa officers make their decisions on whether to issue or deny a visa. I realized my experience and knowledge could be helpful.
